The ease of use, affordability, and quality of the "brew", makes this system easy for me to recommend. If you want full flavored yet smooth coffee, this is for you. When you consider the health benefits as well, then you won't be sorry. Give it a try; you know you want to.
Once you've tasted coffee from this cold brew system you will hate anything else. It's a bit awkward to use but once you've mastered the process you will be in love.
If you load the basket properly, it drains quickly and efficiently). Tried to rig up a cold-brew system in my kitchen, but made a God-awful mess and wasted a lot of coffee. Yes, the handle is a bit flimsy, but I just use it for extra support as I pour with the main container. Seriously--if you pour too fast, you'll have dry pockets, which will cause problems as you strain. I use it most for New Orleans-style iced chicory coffee, and it's fabulous. Everything fits together neatly, and believe me--it's way better than trying to strain using crap you have lying around the kitchen.
(I keep the stopper with it to be sure it doesn't disappear). The taste depends entirely on how you mix it. This worked perfectly when I followed the instructions. And it takes two seconds to rinse the filter and throw it in a tupperware container in the fridge. The carafe seems to hold up fine, and the stopper is tight enough to keep the fridge from smelling like coffee.Just be sure you don't agitate the container or the coffee as you pour the water, and you shouldn't have any problems with clogged filters. (And I've used my filters more than 10 times with satisfactory results). I'm a latte drinker generally, so I never could get a hot mix for regular coffee that worked for me (although my husband likes it), but with a bit of hot, foamed milk, I've made a decent cafe con leche.
I get the Cafe du Monde cans from my local Thai market for much cheaper than the grocery store (apparently it's good for Thai iced tea)., and the pound can of pre-ground coffee makes it simple to just dump and add water.
I replaced an old manual process I developed that involved a cheesecloth sack and a 1/2 gallon plastic pitcher with the Toddy Cold Brew system. This is my favorite way to brew coffee. Worth every penny of the purchase price - ease of cleanup, simplicity of process. The coffee concentrate, is, of course, excellent. The only thing I suggest is to let your grinds steep for a full 24 hours - your patience will be rewarded, the flavors are more fully developed and you will come to appreciate the nuances of the varietals you buy at your local microroaster. The filter removes almost all sediment so you get to use every drop of brew.
The kit comes with two filters. This coffee brewer is very low-tech. I probably could have made cold-brew coffee with what I have in my kitchen, but it's handy to have containers the right shape--they're undoubtedly easier to use and less likely to spill. I wish it came with more. The coffee itself was very good: strong and flavorful.
